Khabarovsk

Places of interest in Khabarovsk

The N.I. Grodekov Museum of Regional Studies is located one block away from the Intourist Hotel at 11 Shevchenko Street (330-864). It is one of the oldest museums in the Russian Far East. The museum houses a rich collection of artifacts describing the cultural and natural history of the region. The museum was recently renovated and is certainly worth spending a couple of hours. The museum is open from 10:00 am till 6:00 pm, except Mondays.

The Far Eastern Art Museum is located on the same street. It was established in 1931 and presently houses over 10,000 pieces of Russian and Western art and a beautiful collection of Far Eastern aboriginal applied arts. The Art Museum was formerly the Military Club.

This beautiful museum with its stained glass windows is the perfect place to exhibit pictures of famous Italian, German and other Renaissance painters, a collection of incredible icons and pictures of Russian artists (peredvizhniks) and other modern art. There is also a wonderful souvenir store towards the back of the entrance of the museum where you can find interesting antiques, postcards, books, etc. The Far Eastern Art Museum is located on 7 Shevchenko Street (330-244). It is open from 10:00 am till 6:00 pm, except Mondays.

The Military Museum is located across from the Art Museum. The Far Eastern Military headquarters maintains the museum. The museum exhibits and photographs document the history of the Red Flag Far Eastern Military District. On the first floor is the Amur Room which offers the most beautiful displays of amber, some of it for sale and fairly expensive. It is much better if you are not necessarily interested in collection pieces but just want to take some home to buy it at the local department store. The museum is located on 20 Shevchenko Street (351-150) and is open daily from 10:00 am till 6 pm.

Another smaller, yet interesting museum is located right off Shevchenko Street. The museum details the history of the communist youth movement but also has a very interesting art gallery that specializes in art from the youth of Khabarovsk. The address of the museum is 86 Turgenev Street.

Some of the most famous writers in Russia lived in Khabarovsk. Interesting facts about such artists an be found in the Museum of Literature, an attractive building that is located on 69 Turgenev Street, again close to the Intourist Hotel.

The geological museum was founded in 1977. It is located in a two-story building in the city's downtown - 15 Lenin Street (215-370). Open seven days a week from 10 am till 6 pm.

The Conference Hall built at the end of the 1970's for the Pacific Scientific Congress is an interesting building from an architectural point of view. The building is now being used for all kinds of regional, national and international conferences and meetings.

The main attraction of this building is a unique mural panel on the wall of the lobby entitled "A poem for the Amur Region", which was made out of more than forty semi-precious stones and shows the natural history of the Far East taiga, its plants, trees, etc. surrounded by pictures of indigenous exotic animals, such as the Amur Tiger.

The Botanical Garden (Arboretum) is a place to relax and to enjoy a kaleidoscope of birch and larch, conifers and the only growing cork wood in the country. Flamboyant flowers and many medicinal and exotic medical plants also grow here. The garden is located on a 15-acre property of the Far Eastern Forestry Research Institute.

Climate:

Khabarovsk has a monsoon climate. Winter winds bring cold and dry air from Siberia and summer winds from the Pacific bring cloudy and rainy weather. Winter is cold with snow and summer is hot and humid.

Summer comes to Khabarovsk in the beginning of June with temperatures in July and August from 30-32 degrees Celsius. Khabarovsk is known, however, as the city that offers the sunniest days in Eastern Russia.
